Thanks for visiting!
Good day from Malificent
I hope you enjoyed my meanderings through the world of Sleeping Beauty and her sister fairy tales. I've spent a great deal of time reading through scholarly journals, primary sources (the original fairy tales), and secondary sources (retellings) in order to get a full understanding of the topic. Although these authors each explore something new and alter the story to their own ends, we see some continuities which can be summarized into the tenets I chose. By reading Sleeping Beauty, we can instantly see that it was written in an era very different than our own, but that does not mean it is useless to us. We see in these stories, new and old, reflections of the society at large. While postmodernists attempt to depart from these traditional stories in their own works, they do see the value in studying them. What type of gender roles were in place? What sort of economic and political situations existed? All this can be seen by reading fairy tales and other types of "genre fiction." We are drawn to it, and will continue to be drawn to it and stories of ilk. We cannot help but be influenced by its story or its messages in our own works of fiction. It is so ingrained in us that we do not even realize its presence in our minds. Although it is not of our time, it has greatly altered it simply as a result of its creation.
While Sleeping Beauty can be a large sociological and anthropological study, I hope I have contributed in some small way to this volume of scholarship.
